S. Korea welcomes the idea for DPRK to participate in the next Security Summit if "substantive results" are achieved at the six-party nuclear disarmament talks. DPRK was not invited to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington and President Lee encourages Pyongyang to return to the six-party talks. In doing so, the nuclear tension on the peninsula can slowly dissolve if DPRK displays a sincere and genuine commitment to return to the six-party talks this year or the following year.
President Lee is in Washington for the Nuclear Security Summit and discussed about the protection of nuclear material and the contributions S. Korea would make to the international community. Since S. Korea is chosen to host the next Summit in 2012.
Significance of S. Korea's hosting of the Nuclear Security Summit is due to the following: S. Korea has complied with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in good faith and followed other related international standards, setting an excellent example of utilizing nuclear power for peaceful means. The Korean Peninsula bears a crucial significance in terms of resolving nuclear issues. On this backdrop the U.S. and other participating nations at the Summit actively supported Korea's hosting of the next Nuclear Security Summit.
In preparation for the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit the Korean Government will collaborate with other major nations, including the United States. The Korean Nuclear Security Summit will be the largest summit in Korean history just like the summit in Washington is the biggest in U.S. recent history.
