Hyundai Steel announced today that it has succeeded in mass production for the first time in the world by developing 1.8 GPa premium hot stamping steel with the Hyundai Motor Kia Namyang Research Center for Basic Materials.

Hyundai Steel is supplying new steel types to Hyundai Motor's next-generation electric vehicle, the Genesis Electrified G80 (G80EV) and the new G90.

The initial supply to Hyundai Motors started last year, and from this year on, it will supply 145,000 units annually. This is the amount that can be used for about 30,000 electric vehicles.

The 1.8GPa ultra-high-strength hot stamping steel can not only lighten the vehicle, but also ensure the safety of passengers in the event of a car crash.

Compared to the existing 1.5GPa hot stamping steel, the tensile strength is improved by 20%, and the weight can be reduced by about 10% when manufacturing parts.

The Basic Materials Research Center of Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Motor Company Namyang Research Center developed a specialized method that lowered the temperature of the heating furnace by more than 50℃ and applied it to the production of parts.

They used this method to prevent hydrogen from penetrating into the steel plate, preventing internal cracks from occurring.

As a result, Hyundai Steel was able to produce steel sheets that are resistant to corrosion and also reduced the amount of energy required for production by lowering the temperature.

Meanwhile, in order to preoccupy the eco-friendly automobile materials market, Hyundai Steel has built 22 hot stamping facilities in South Chungcheong Province and two in Ulsan. The two factories can produce up to 58 million sheets per year. They are the third largest in the world.

“The key to future eco-friendly cars is the development of high-strength steel that can reduce weight and secure the safety of passengers," said an official from Hyundai Steel Research Institute. "To this end, Hyundai Steel will continue to expand the development and application of parts using hot stamping to become the world’s best eco-friendly automobile material specialist.”
