SK Telecom announced on December 28 (local time) in Washington, D.C., that it succeeded in transmitting terrestrial broadcasting using MEC and virtualization technology in collaboration with Sinclair Broadcast Group, North America's largest terrestrial broadcaster, and Cast.era, a media tech company under SK Square.

This demonstration was conducted in the Arlington area near Washington, D.C. Using ATSC 3.0 standard radio waves applied with the SKT Media Edge platform, communication was conducted with a driving vehicle through WIAV-CD, a Sinclair local broadcasting system.

ATSC 3.0 is a UHD broadcasting standard established by ATSC, an American digital TV broadcasting standardization organization. This adds data to video and audio and carries them on a frequency, enabling high-definition video transmission at high speed.

In this demonstration, a next-generation convergence broadcasting service combining ATSC 3.0 broadcasting and 5G communication, which quickly receives regionally customized data information through a communication network when reaching a set area along with stable high-definition TV broadcasting while driving, was successfully implemented.

On this day, Sinclair Chairman David Smith, SK Telecom CEO Yoo Young-sang, and Cast.Era officials attended and experienced the service firsthand, while sharing their opinions on cooperation plans related to next-generation broadcasting services.

This demonstration attracted a lot of interest from local broadcasters in that it implemented next-generation services by using the existing transmission networks of US broadcasting companies.

When the Media Edge platform is applied, each regional broadcasting station can efficiently manage and operate broadcasting services of hundreds of regional broadcasting stations across North America by using general-purpose equipment and virtualization software systems without large-scale investment such as installation of dedicated equipment.

It is expected to greatly reduce the cost burden associated with the introduction of next-generation broadcasting services in the future.

In addition, this platform is suitable for In Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) services as it enables real-time high-definition TV viewing, real-time notification of disasters and emergencies, and regionally customized advertising services based on interactive communication through 5G networks.

SKT developed the Media Edge platform used to provide media services as a specialized service for each industry of 5G MEC, and increased operational efficiency by virtualizing the broadcasting transmission system.

SKT is advancing broadcast video high-quality conversion technology using MEC technology and AI semiconductor SAPEON with Sinclair and Cast.era, and plans to continue strengthening cooperation to advance next-generation convergence broadcasting services.
