Ecologist and data scientist, Dr. Monica Granados discusses the Open Science Campaign with Dr. Layne Hartsell

The Creative Commons launched their 4-Year Open Climate Campaign late last year in 2022, and I contacted a lead scientist on the project, Dr. Monica Granados (Canada) about this remarkable project. The open science movement has contributed greatly to public awareness and subsequent public participation in science and society.

Professor Cable Green (USA), Director of Open Knowledge at Creative Commons says “Climate change, and the resulting harm to our global biodiversity, is one of the world’s most pressing challenges. While the existence of climate change and the resulting loss of biodiversity is certain, knowledge and data about these global challenges and the possible solutions, mitigations and actions to tackle them are too often not publicly accessible.”

In this discussion with Dr. Granados, we look at one of the most important topics of today, and in history – climate change. The central question is how open science can contribute to climate mitigation through public involvement. Dr. Granados begins by the discussing personal background of this work related to ecology or organisms and the natural environment, and the applied computational models.

As the current campaign manager for Creative Commons’ Open Climate Campaign, the challenge is to create public access and understanding of knowledge and science, “if we are going to solve the world’s greatest problems; the knowledge has to be open.” Her leadership plan is, first, to create “physical” (or direct) access to digital resources that are not behind an expensive paywall.

Next, the plan is to create “another layer of accessibility” to make the knowledge easy to enter into concerning understanding and then to deepen towards a comprehensive understanding. Another challenge is that science is usually in English, therefore, some of the work is to get the information into various languages. A further part of the project is to make the information available for people with various disabling conditions such as visual impairments. This interview is important for those involved in climate leadership and also for young people interested in open science and participation.

Monica Granados, MSc, PhD, is an ecologist/data scientist and the Open Climate Campaign Manager at Creative Commons; and former adviser on Environment and Climate Change for the Canadian Government.

Layne Hartsell, MSc, PhD is a board member at the Korea IT Times and is a research professor at the Asia Institute, Berlin/Tokyo in energy, economy, environment (3E).
