SK Telecom said that it will announce its big data platform "Geovision-based COVID-19" response cases at the 6th International Conference on Big Data for Official Statistics, which will be held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 under the auspices of the Big Data UN Global Working Group and Statistics Korea.
Founded in 2014, the "Big Data U.N. Global Working Group" is composed of national statistical offices of major countries such as Korea, the U.S., and Japan, and is jointly conducting research on big data and sustainable development, satellite data and geography/ spatial data, mobile data, and SNS data.
The theme of the upcoming "Big Data International Conference" is "How Big Data can help COVID-19 Response." Statistics experts from around the world attending the meeting will discuss how big data can contribute to the Corona response and future sustainable growth drive.
At the meeting, SK Telecom will announce a case of the COVID-19 related population movement survey conducted with the Statistics Korea. Based on mobile big data, the results of analyzing the people's "movement volume" after the outbreak of COVID-19 were used by the government to respond to the spread of COVID-19.
SK Telecom also received much attention from participants by announcing a case in which it provided its big data-based real-time floating population analysis service "Geovision" to various public institutions for free to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Public institutions have also started to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by actively utilizing "Geovision" to strengthen quarantine in certain areas and enforce pinpoint patrols.
"Geovision" is a global top-level big data and spatial data analysis service that can check the floating population in places around the country every five minutes.
Through SK Telecom's own big data analysis platform called "GIRAF," it analyzes huge amounts of data amounting to 60 terabytes (TB) every five minutes and even provides visualizations.
In addition, it received much attention by announcing various big data use cases such as supporting analysis of small business owners' commercial districts using floating population data, and supporting the establishment of a national transportation database, along with the world's first case of preparing national statistics based on telecommunication data in 2016.
"Participation in this conference and our announcement show that the world recognizes SK Telecom's ability to utilize big data," said Jang Hong-sung, head of SK Telecom's advertising/data division. "We will continue to contribute to social development through ICT capabilities such as 5G and AI."
