LG U+ has signed a contract with KDDI, a Japanese mobile carrier, to export "U+ AR Magic Library," an educational content for augmented reality (AR). This is the first time that 5G-based educational content is exported to a foreign telecommunication company.
The U+ AR Magic Library is a children-specialized AR educational content available through mobile apps and IPTV. In partnership with 24 world-renowned children's book publishers, 230 English books have been produced in 3-D AR and are being provided exclusively.
Based on the export contract, the two companies plan to continue cooperation on AR contents. LG U+ is going to share not only contents but also AR operation and know-how in server and traffic management. In addition, the company will continue to update English fairy tale contents.
LG U+ is working hard on realistic contents such as AR and VR as 5G killer contents. Its plan is to target foreign markets based on exclusive contents.
The results are also coming out one after another. Last year, it exported 5G contents and solutions to China Telecom. This year, it exported VR contents to Hong Kong Telecom, Japan's KDDI, and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom.
"The two companies agreed on the need to apply AR and VR, which are realistic technologies that can be expanded to various areas, to 5G and apply them to overall customers' lives." said Choi Yoon-ho, executive director of AR/VR services at LG U+.
“In particular, KDDI showed interest in our approach to solving education areas through AR and VR, so this export was made. In the future, we will continue to differentiate 5G services with realistic services and contents that apply AR and VR throughout our customers' lives, including education, in consideration of the untact situation caused by COVID-19."
