LG Chem ranked first in the list of battery usage for global electric vehicles (EVs, PHEVs, and HEVs) that were sold between January and August this year.
The market share of the three Korean companies has more than doubled from 16.2 percent in the same period last year to 35.1 percent this year.
According to SNE Research, a market research company, the global use of LG Chem's batteries with electric vehicles reached 15.9 GWh in the January-August period of this year, accounting for 24.6 percent of the total battery use of electric vehicles (64.7 GWh).
China's CATL came in second with 15.5 GWh (24.0 percent). Third place went to Panasonic of Japan, which recorded 12.4 GWh (19.2 percent).
SNE Research analyzed, "Due to the outbreak of new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), demand for electric vehicles decreased in the first half of this year mainly in China and the U.S., which are major markets."
Samsung SDI and SK Innovation ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, with 6.3 percent and 4.2 percent share, ranking within the top 10.
Although CATL and Panasonic, the second and third largest companies in annual cumulative market share, showed reverse growth compared to the same period last year, the three Korean companies, LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SK Innovation, grew from last year.
