LG Electronics ranked 6th and Samsung Electronics 28th in the "100 Most Sustainably Managed Companies in the World" list selected by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

According to industry sources on Oct. 13, LG Electronics received 76.9 points out of 100 and Samsung Electronics 74.2 points in the evaluation of "The 100 Most Sustainably Managed Companies in the World."

Japan's Sony ranked first among the top 100 global sustainable management companies selected by the WSJ this year.

The WSJ praised Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, who took office in 2018. Sony had fallen to the bottom by 2014 due to its slump in traditional flagship products such as TVs, smartphones and laptops, but it later dominated new businesses such as image sensors and strengthened its entertainment division through drastic restructuring.

Yoshida, who promoted innovation as chief financial officer with former Sony Chairman Kazuo Hirai, is now even working on the self-driving car market.

The WSJ said in the survey that it has selected companies that can benefit shareholders in the long run, taking into account the business model, innovation, social contribution and labor, environment and management methods of more than 5,500 listed companies worldwide.

It added that transparency to access corporate information was the most important factor in the ranking selection.

By industry, among the top 100 companies, 18 were manufacturers, followed by 10 chemical companies. The number of semiconductor companies was seven.

Among the top 100 companies, 23 percent were U.S. companies, followed by Japanese (16 percent) and French (9 percent).

For South Korean companies, LG Electronics ranked sixth, while Samsung Electronics ranked 28th, followed by LG Household & Health Care (86th), GS Engineering & Construction (92nd), and AmorePacific Group (99th).
