SK Telecom, led by CEO Park Jung-ho, announced on Oct. 28 that it won the "Cloud Native Award" at the World Communication Awards (WCA) held in London, England.
The WCA was first established in 1999 under the auspices of Total Telecom, a British telecom-specialized media, and this year it has selected telecommunications and manufacturers around the world that have made outstanding achievements in a total of 23 areas, including technology and content.
In 1919, SKT also won the prize in "the Innovation Award Operator" category for its AI-based network management system Tango.
The Cloud Native Award is awarded to companies that have achieved outstanding innovations in cloud technology and utilization, and SKT won the award for "multi-cloud-based 5G edge platforms and services."
Based on its own MEC platform, SKT is building a 5G MEC platform that supports multi-cloud such as AWS Wavelength and MS Azure.
It is also working with global telecommunication businesses such as Deutsche Telekom to form 'Telecom Edge Cloud TF' and to spread ultra-low delay services such as cloud games and smart factories globally.
With this award, SKT has won six consecutive awards at this year's 5G-related global awards, proving its global top-level 5G technology.
"The world recognizes that Korea's 5G is the world's No. 1. SKT will make more efforts to solidify Korea's status as the top ICT country," said Kim Yoon, CTO of SKT.
