SKT has put a '5G flag' on Ieodo, the southernmost island in South Korea.
SK Telecom announced on November 8 that it has established the first 5G base station in Korea at Ieodo Marine Science Base, which is located in the southernmost part of South Korea.
Ieodo Marine Science Base is a base built on Ieodo, about 150 kilometers southwest of the southernmost Marado, where Korea conducts marine research and meteorological observations.
It took a long time to send data to the National Oceanographic Research Institute by real-time monitoring of marine phenomena such as water temperature, waves, wind speed and radioactivity at the marine science base.
Due to the foggy climate that nearly half of the year, communication services have been difficult to use.
To overcome this problem, SKT established 5G infrastructure at its marine science base and expanded transmission network to link satellite communication network with 5G network. In addition, the company provided support for interworking with CCTVs in the base.
Through this, the marine science base will be able to quickly collect and analyze digital location and information between the probe and the marine measuring equipment around the base.
In addition, it can be provided in real-time through researchers' tablets and mobile phones, which can increase efficiency of research.
SK Telecom explained that it is possible to monitor the status of the base, inspect and maintain ship operations such as exploration ships and underwater gliders without having to go to the base directly.
In addition to marine observation, real-time abnormalities around Ieodo can be detected through ultra-high-definition CCTVs. Ieodo Marine Science Base expects that this will also strengthen its monitoring system.
"We will continue to make efforts to provide high-quality 5G services in various areas of life, including land and sea," said Kang Jong-ryul, head of ICT Infra Center of SKT.
