LG Display has obtained eco-product certification from Swiss inspection and certification authority SGS for OLED TV panels.
SGS evaluated overall environmental aspects of OLED TV panels, and evaluated that eco-friendliness is excellent especially for three items such as Indoor Air Pollutants, Hazardous Substances, and Recycling.
It is estimated that OLED TV panels have reduced emissions of total volatile organic compounds (Total VOCs), which are known to cause atopic dermatitis and sick house syndrome, by more than 50% compared to LCD panels.
Total VOCs are mainly released from plastics, while LCDs need various plastic-based sheets and parts used for backlights, while OLEDs reduce the use of components harmful to the environment with simple structures that spontaneously glow without backlight.
Unlike some high-end LCD products, OLED TV panels did not use any parts containing harmful substances such as cadmium, a carcinogen classified by the International Cancer Research Institute (IARC) under the World Health Organization (WHO), or indium phosphide, a cancer-estimating substance in the second group.
They also showed excellent resource efficiency and recycling rates by reducing the number of parts compared to LCDs.
"As indoor TV viewing time increases due to COVID-19, interest in comfortable and eco-friendly TVs is increasing," said Oh Chang-ho, vice president of LG Display's TV business division. "The OLED, which takes into account health and environment as well as excellent picture quality, is the best TV in the COVID-19 era."
Meanwhile, LG Display is focusing on developing eco-friendly products and expanding production. By introducing a self-evaluation index called "Eco Index," the company is making efforts to evaluate and improve the use of recycled materials, power consumption, and harmful substances from the stage of product development.
