Hanmi Pharm, led by co-CEOs Kwon Se-chang and Woo Jong-soo, ranked first in donations among the top 500 pharmaceutical bio companies in the third quarter of this year. Hanmi Pharm also spent the largest amount of donations in the same period last year.
According to a survey of 257 companies that submitted quarterly reports and disclosed donations among the top 500 companies in terms of sales on Dec. 4, Hanmi Pharm's accumulated donations in the first third quarters of this year amounted to 2.9 billion won ($2.6 million), up 3.2 percent from the same period last year.
The figure is the largest among six companies in the pharmaceutical and bio companies that have disclosed their donations. In the same period, its donations to sales accounted for 0.36 percent, ranking first among companies surveyed.
In the same period last year, Hanmi Pharm also spent the highest amount of donations among the surveyed companies.
As of the third quarter of this year, donations to the pharmaceutical industry were high in the order of Hanmi Pharm, Chong Kun Dang (about 1.3 billion won), Yuhan (about 1.2 billion won), GC Green Cross (about 1 billion won), Kwangdong Pharmaceutical (about 800 million won), and Celltrion Healthcare (about 20 million won).
Hanmi Pharm spent about 4.42 billion won in donations last year. A total of 315 executives and employees participated in the 1,248 hours of service.
In 1980, Cheongnokhoe, a group of female employees in the company, started volunteer work every month. At all workplaces, a service promotion system and programs have been set up so that all executives and employees can look back on their underprivileged neighbors and join the service.
Hanmi Pharm's representative social contribution activity is 'blood donation of love'. It also began as an in-house campaign in 1981. So far, more than 8,000 employees have participated. The cumulative blood volume is 2,683,200cc, which is the amount that can be transfused to about 25,000 people.
In 2009, the Hanmi Women's Association, a family gathering of executives and employees, was formed. The association holds an annual charity bazaar to donate money to Anna's House in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, which promotes rehabilitation and youth education projects for homeless people.
