LG Display announced on Dec. 14 that Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO), which is a display that vibrates and makes sounds without a separate speaker, has been listed as a Korean Industrial Standard (KS) established by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS).
The Cinematic Sound OLED is technology that can only be implemented by OLED displays that have thin fault structures that emit light on their own.
This technique produces sound as the display acts as a vibrator. LG Display was developed and commercialized for the first time in the world in 2016.
Because the display makes its own sound, it feels like the characters on the screen are talking directly, so it has the advantage of having a "high sense of immersion" and a "living sense of realism" that existing regular speakers do not have.
There was a limit to objectively evaluating and measuring the differentiated advantages of the CSO because the existing standard is based on regular speakers.
Accordingly, LG Display established a dedicated organization in 2018 and promoted standardization in order to establish standards that can be recognized and quantified differentiated advantages of the CSO.
It is predicted that the CSO will quickly expand into various markets such as Auto and Digital Signage following OLED TV.
The KATS selected the CSO as an international standard development task for promising new industries as it believes that the CSO will play an important role in leading global OLED display markets.
In order to strengthen global technology competitiveness and preoccupy the market, the KATS has also decided to list the CSO in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
"It is very meaningful in that CSO's technology has been recognized as the standard listing of 'sound-making displays' with infinite scalability and marketability during the standard war to dominate the global market," said Yoon Soo-young, executive director of CTO at LG Display. "We will continue to strengthen our technological leadership and lead the next-generation OLED market through continuous technological innovation."
