World's first successful verification of MEC roaming technology with Telefonica, China Unicom
KT announced on Dec. 17 that it has successfully verified its MEC roaming technology, which serves the home country's Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) function in foreign countries, along with Spain's Telefonica and China Unicom, for the first time.
MEC is a technology that processes users' data at a very close physical distance (edge) without moving it to the central server. When applied to 5G networks, 5G convergence services that require ultra-low latency functions such as connected cars and smart factories can be performed more smoothly.
KT used APP (Smartphone App) that has MEC function to verify this technology. While connected by roaming, the media content of the season was tested to be provided to the device at the most suitable location, considering the location of the user, the latency and bandwidth required by the app among the national carrier MEC.
When MEC roaming technology is commercialized, roaming service users will be able to continue to enjoy ultra-low latency data services that they used to enjoy in Korea using MEC infrastructure of local telecommunication companies even if they visit overseas.
"By verifying MEC roaming technology, users will be able to receive high-quality, fast and safe 5G services not only in Korea but also abroad. We will develop various innovative technologies and differentiated communication platforms to lead the global MEC market by developing various innovative technologies and differentiated communication platforms,” said Lee Jong-shik, executive director of KT Infra Research Center.
