S-OIL announced on Dec. 21 that it held the 2020 Marine Police Hero Awards with the Korea Social Welfare Council at its headquarters in Gongdeok-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and awarded 70 million won in plaque and prize money to six hero maritime police of the year.
The awards ceremony was held in a simple manner, with only the top hero maritime police, a leading winner, attending in compliance with the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines.
At the ceremony, S-Oil delivered a plaque and prize money of 20 million won to the top hero maritime policeman, Jeong Yong-soo (34, Tongyeong Maritime Police Station), and 10 million won and a plaque to five "hero maritime police officers," including Moon Hong-min (38, West Sea Coast Guard).
Police officer Jeong Yong-soo, who was selected as the most heroic maritime police officer, rescued 23 swimmers isolated in a cave of the Haegeumgang River in Geoje in August safely despite bad weather conditions.
"The marine police officers who risk their lives in the middle of the ocean are truly heroes," said Ryu Yeol, president of S-OIL.
S-Oil signed an agreement with the Korea Coast Guard in 2013 to encourage maritime police committed to ship rescue, marine pollution prevention, and illegal fishing boat control. Under the pact, it supports student funds for children of deceased marine police, medical expenses for damaged marine police, and marine police couple's vacation camp.
