LG Display made an announcement on Dec. 31 that it will introduce "Transparent OLED" at CES 2021, the world's largest IT and home appliance exhibition that will be held online on Jan. 11 (local time) next year.

Transparent OLED is used in various living environments. LG Display, which is the only one in the world that is mass-producing transparent OLEDs, is planning to show various scenes of use through three transparent OLED exhibition zones, including smart homes, metros, and restaurants.

The Smart Home Zone is going to introduce Smart Bed that combines bed and transparent OLED. If necessary, transparent OLED is implemented in various screen ratios inside the bed frame, allowing users to check weather information or watch TV or movies.

Also, the bed frame with a built-in transparent OLED is independently separated. So it can move freely anywhere in the house.

The Metro Zone replaced high-transparent OLED windows in subway rooms, allowing passengers to check route maps and local information while enjoying the outside scenery.

The restaurant zone shows the concept needed for the non-face-to-face era caused by COVID-19. At a sushi bar, transparent OLED can be installed in the space between customers and chefs to act as a partition and check the menu at the same time.  Customers also watch TV during waiting times through transparent OLED.

Transparent OLED enables transparency of 40% that is much more transparent than other transparent LCDs, providing clear image quality like glass.

"Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED, and demand is increasing in various fields such as shopping malls, architectural interior, self-driving cars, and aircraft," said Park Jong-sun, executive director of LG Display. "It is going to grow into next-generation displays that can change display paradigms."
