Hong Nam-ki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, said on Jan. 21, "The government has announced a plan to train 17,000 system semiconductor workers by 2030, but it is necessary to provide a detailed manpower training plan immediately. We will plan to supply 3,638 people by next year.”
Hong also said, "We are trying to support the commercialization of 4 stages of self-driving cars (Lv.4) in the future. The government is going to invest 1.1 trillion won into developing core technologies such as sensors and telecommunication technologies."
Deputy Prime Minister Hong said at the 3rd Innovative Growth BIG3 Promotion Meeting held at the Seoul Government Complex on the same day, "This year, competition for the development of 4 stages of autonomous driving is expected to begin in earnest with the launch of 3rd stage (Lv.3) self-driving technology."
In order to foster bachelor's level talent, Deputy Prime Minister Hong said, "We will train 1,120 bachelor's level workers by next year, including the establishment of fabless-linked design track and additional recruitment-linked contract departments."
"with the aim of producing 1,000 masters and doctorate level talents during the same period, the government plan to promote projects such as developing core technologies, training high-end personnel, and linking employment," said Hong. "We also plan to train 373 next-generation workers based on industry-academic links by 2022 and 165 more foundry professionals."
"We plan to educate a total of 1,560 working-level talents by next year by providing short-term education through the Semiconductor Design Education Center and Design Support Center," added Hong.
The government has decided to invest 1.1 trillion won ($1 billion) in a total of 84 detailed tasks to support the development of four stages of self-driving technologies such as sensors and communication technologies such as Lidar.
It is going to promote localization and follow-up commercialization of nine major components that are in charge of important functions in the third stage of autonomous driving.
The government is also planning to establish an integrated C-ITS management center this year. It is also going to prepare safety standards and insurance systems that are needed to release 4 stages of self-driving.
"This year, a global automobile manufacturer will launch a car with three stages of self-driving technology and it is predicted that competition for development of 4th level self-driving technology will intensify," said Hong. "We will focus on supporting commercialization of 4th stage self-driving cars by investing KRW 1.1 trillion into development of core technologies."
