SK Hynix held the completion ceremony of M16 at its headquarters in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do on Feb. 1. Under the theme of "We Do Technology, Opening Happiness," the completion ceremony was held simply as an in-group event to comply with the COVID-19 quarantine rules.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Senior Vice Chairman Choi Jae-won, SK Supex Council Chairman Cho Dae-sik, SK Hynix Vice Chairman Park Jung-ho, SK Corp. CEO Jang Dong-hyun, SK Hynix CEO Lee Seok-hee, and SK Hynix senior outside director Ha Young-koo attended the event through video connection.
Chairman Chey said, "When we said we were building the M16 two years ago, when the semiconductor business was on the decline, there were many concerns," adding, "But now that we are talking about the semiconductor upcycle, the bold decision made at a difficult time has allowed us to dream of a bigger future."
He said, "The M16 will remain an important symbol as a completion of the big plan that the company has drawn up and a starting point leading to the Yongin cluster in the future."
Chairman Chey said, "As there have been many people's help in the process of M16's birth, M16 will now contribute to their happiness," and added, "Please find various possibilities in terms of ESG, not only economic value but also cooperative companies' win-win, environmental protection, and community development."
SK Hynix completed construction in 25 months with a total of 3.5 trillion won ($3.2 million) and 3.34 million construction workers since the construction of M16 in November 2018.
The M16, which will mainly produce DRAM products, is built with a construction area of 57,000㎡ (17,000 pyeong), which is equivalent to eight soccer fields, and is 336 meters long, 163 meters wide, and 105 meters high, 37 floors.
CEO Lee Seok-hee said, "M16 is a complex manufacturing facility with state-of-the-art infrastructure such as EUV-only space and advanced pollution reduction facilities," adding, "It will be a high-level production base that contributes to ESG management as well as economic value creation in the future."
SK Hynix is expecting that M16 will play a role as a stepping stone to implement 'Financial Story'. SK Hynix announced its financial story vision in October last year that it will increase competitiveness of memory semiconductor industries with both wings –DRAM and Nand-- and focus on creating SV (social value) and managing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).
