The first model of Hyundai Motor's electric vehicle brand, "IONIQ 5" has finally been unveiled.
Hyundai Motor held an online press conference on Feb. 23 (Korea time) to unveil the Ioniq 5. At the press conference, the company broadcast a video showing the main design and commerciality of the Ioniq 5 to the world through its YouTube channel.
Hyundai Motor explained that it has set the direction of the Ioniq 5 as an eco-friendly vehicle that signals the full-fledged arrival of the electric vehicle era.
Hyundai Motor has applied Electric-Global Modular Platform(E-GMP), a platform exclusively for electric vehicles, to the Ioniq 5.
"It is an honor to introduce Hyundai Motor's first electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5, which will provide a completely new experience with innovative interior space and advanced technology," said Thomas Schmiera, head of Hyundai's customer experience division. "We will change the paradigm of electric cars by supporting various lifestyles of customers with Ionic 5."
The front of the Ioniq 5 is equipped with a Clamshell hood covering the entire upper part of the headlight, which is located long from side to side. It also minimizes the parting line where the faces meet and divide into lines, giving a high-tech feel.
The Intelligent Air Flow Controller (AAF) at the bottom of the front bumper reduces air resistance by facilitating airflow while driving.
In case of the side, a 20-inch wheel with an aerodynamic structure was applied to a straight character line based on a silhouette reminiscent of a pony.
The rear part emphasizes unity with the front by applying thin rear lights that extend from side to side, and creates a future design.
Wireless charging system of high-speed smartphone is applied to indoor space with 15W level. It has a tray structure divided up and down, and for the bottom tray, luggage such as a laptop or handbag can be collected.
In addition, it is equipped with a first row driver's seat and passenger seat (including leg supports), which creates a weightless posture with seat backrest and cushion angle adjustment, and a second row electric sliding seat that can move up to 135mm forward.
Hyundai Motor will operate the Ioniq 5 as two models, a long range with 72.6kWh battery and a standard with 58.0kWh battery.
The maximum driving distance for a single charge is 410-430km based on the long-range rear-wheel drive model, and 80% of the battery capacity can be charged within 18 minutes when charging 350 kW ultra-fast. It can also run up to 100 kilometers on a five-minute charge.
The Ioniq 5 also introduced the world's first 400V/800V multi-fast charging system. This multi-fast charging system allows for stable charging by boosting the 400V to the 800V optimized for vehicle systems.
Mass production of the Ioniq 5 will start at Hyundai's Ulsan plant from March. Sales in Korea and Europe will start in the first half of this year followed by a U.S. launch in the second half.
Korean customers will be able to place orders for the long-range trim from Feb. 25.
