Kim Seang-tae, President of National Information Society Agency of Korea (NIA) attended the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Broadband Commission meeting in New York with other top level executives who are members of the commission to built the final declaration for Digital Development . The declaration calls for access to broadband networks to be a basic civil right and has challenged the world's leaders to ensure that more than half of all the world's people have access to broadband networks by 2015. Since, this Commission has the support of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, 'A 2010 leadership Imperative: The Future Built on Broadband' and the declaration were forwarded to Secretary-General Ban.
On September 21st, Kim Seang-tae will also sign a MOU agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding medical information technology cooperation. The NIA and the WHO will explore the business opportunities to promote medical information technology cooperation in western Pacific island countries and coastal areas (PICs). Also they will work together to improve the medical information service via the standardization of software frameworks, research and skill development as well as co-hosting the related seminars and symposia.
President Kim said, "As entering the digital age, cooperation projects with international organizations will enhance the national competitiveness as smart Korea, and it will be beneficial for the brand reputation of Korea and global job creation."
This past May, ITU and UNESCO established a top level Broadband Commission for Digital Development which will define strategies for accelerating broadband roll-out worldwide and examine applications that could see broadband networks improve the delivery of a huge range of social services, from healthcare to education, environmental management, safety and much more.
The new Commission comprises some 30 top names from around the world, representing not just technology leaders, but leaders from across a wide range of business and social sectors. It is co-chaired by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Mr Carlos Slim Hélu, Honorary Lifetime Chairman of Grupo Carso.
