Samsung Display recently announced that it will introduce Artifical Intelligence (AI) technology to major areas of panel development and is increasing its efficiency.
The most representative area that AI technology was introduced is "OLED organic material design" field.
Previously, engineers designed materials by changing molecular structures themselves and finding structures that represent desired characteristics. Recently, when engineers set desired characteristic values, AI simulates a large number of cases and designs to fit the answer.
AI designs material structures considering the number of cases and verifies them one by one through direct experiments. It takes only 30 seconds to design 100 molecular structures of organic materials and derive characteristic values through AI.
As AI provides numerous simulations in a short time, engineers can focus on high value-added tasks, which increases work productivity.
In addition, AI technology is actively being used in this field as display resolution increases and panel-driven circuit design work becomes more difficult.
When designing low-resolution panels, engineers can obtain the desired output through repeated drawing operations.
However, high-resolution panels such as 4K and 8K will require a lot of time to produce desired results due to high probability of malfunction such as circuit interference.
If AI technology is used, it is possible to design and verify 640,000 driving circuits per day with one server computer equipped with 64-core CPUs.
Furthermore, due to the much wider scope of simulation exploration, the design speed is much faster and the possibility of finding the optimal route for results is much greater.
Based on these achievements, Samsung Display held an online lecture under the theme of "AI and Machine Learning for Display" at "Display Week 2021" hosted by "Social for Information Display (SID)" on May 19.
"In the future, AI technology will become more important in the display industry," said Kim Yong-jo, head of CAE team who gave the lecture. "As panel development processes become more advanced and technology difficult, AI technology will be expanded to optimization of systems that connect unit designs such as materials, devices, and circuits as well as development areas."
