Coupang announced on May 26 that it has begun full-scale operation of the "Coupang Care" program, which allows delivery workers to stop working for a month and focus only on their health care.

"Coupang Care" is a newly implemented program by Coupang, which has made the health and safety of workers a top management principle.

It is expected to be another milestone in Coupang's efforts to lead the development of the working environment in the courier logistics industry such as pushing for a direct employment system and operating a 52-hour workweek.

Coupang Care, jointly developed by Coupang with experts in medical and healthcare, is a program that allows delivery workers with relatively unstable health indicators such as blood pressure and blood sugar to stop shipping for a month and focus only on their health care.

During the program period, salaries are paid as usual.

To this end, Coupang hired a family medicine specialist who served as the head of the general hospital's health care center, designed the program through cooperation with external medical institutions, and began operations late last month.

In general, delivery workers in the delivery industry are self-employed businesses, so it is difficult to stop working and focus on their health care even if there are signs of health problems.

"Coupang Care" is a program designed to drastically improve this problem so that delivery workers can focus only on their health care for a month without worrying about income disconnection.

Unlike other delivery logistics industries, which operate on an outsourcing basis, this is possible due to Coupang's management method, which directly employs all delivery workers.

Participants in the program will be provided with specialist health promotion education on nutrition, exercise, and disease management and supported to achieve their goals such as individual-optimized diet, exercise, smoking and drinking, sleep and stress management through expert counseling.

According to the survey, 82% of participants said, "After participating in the program, I've become healthier and my health care skills have improved."

"We have set up and implemented a Coupang Care program in accordance with the principle that the health and safety of workers are the top priority," said Kang Han-seung, representative director of business management at Coupang. "Along with Coupang's direct employment and five-day workweek, I hope the program will also serve as a new standard for the courier logistics industry."

Meanwhile, Coupang released the program on its YouTube channel. The video showed participants being satisfied after hearing the success of the challenge and examples of participants recovering their health.
