Samsung Heavy Industries said on May 31 that it has signed a KRW 417 billion won (US$374 million) deal to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

Under the deal with an Oceanian owner, Samsung Heavy Industries will deliver the LNG carriers sequentially by July 2024.

The ships that Samsung Heavy Industries won this time are equipped with the latest eco-friendly smart ship technology that increases fuel efficiency.

"The vessel can drastically reduce fuel consumption by using the air lubrication system SAVER Air, a technology that increases fuel efficiency by reducing friction resistance between ships and seawater, and a shaft generator that generates electricity," Samsung Heavy Industries explained. "The ship can drastically reduce fuel consumption by installing an axial generator that generates electricity using the rotational power of a propulsion engine."

"SVESSEL," a smart ship solution that automatically establishes optimal operating conditions and routes, is applied to enable more economical operation.

"In order to cope with tightened greenhouse gas emission regulations, demand for eco-friendly technologies that increase energy efficiency is on the rise." said an official at Samsung Heavy Industries. "We are going to increase our competitive edge in winning orders by preempting latest eco-friendly Smartship technologies."

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries has won a total of 44 orders worth $5.4 billion so far this year, accounting for 59 percent of its target for this year. The company raised its order target to $9.1 billion from $7.8 billion this year, considering the recent increase in ship orders.
