Samsung Display has developed a low-power smartphone OLED panel that reduced power consumption by 25%.

Samsung Display made an announcement on August 16 that it has reduced power consumption of panels by up to 25 percent. It developed a stacked structure of panels that prevents external light reflection instead of polarizer and increased light transmittance by 33 percent.

Opaque polarizer is a component that increases the visibility of OLED displays by preventing light from outside panels from being reflected by touching electrodes between pixels.

In general, light is reduced by more than 50% in brightness when passed through a polarizer, which reduces light efficiency.

Display industries have tried various things to overcome polarizer's weaknesses, and Samsung Display succeeded in developing technologies that improved light efficiency as it internalized polarizer functions for the first time in the industry.

Samsung Display branded this technology as "Eco²OLED™" and recently applied for trademark applications in 7 countries including South Korea, the U.S., the U.K., China, and Japan.

Eco²OLED™ means that it is an eco-friendly component that reduces the use of plastic material along with efficient power consumption. This technology was applied for the first time to Samsung Electronics' foldable display of Galaxy Z-fold 3.

Samsung Display explained that it was able to secure UPC-based technologies by transferring more light to camera modules at the bottom of panels due to improved light transmittance of displays. UPC stands for Under Panel Camera, which places camera modules at the bottom of panels.

"Eco²OLED™ is a groundbreaking technology that increases optical efficiency of panels and improves power consumption by changing the basic structure of OLEDs," said Kim Sung-chul, president of Samsung Display's small and medium-sized business department. "Samsung Display plans to reduce power consumption of panels with innovative driving technologies and organic materials."
