SK Innovation announced on August 30 that it had been recognized for its contribution to the mangrove forest restoration project, which is a practical ESG (environmental, social, and governance) management activity, by the Vietnamese government of Tra Vinh.
On August 9, the Vietnamese government of Tra Vinh recognized the contribution to mangrove forest restoration and conservation of natural resources, and awarded the achievement award to SK Innovation and Manglub, a social enterprise that successfully carried out business in Vietnam.
Manglub, a social enterprise nurtured by SK Innovation, received this award in the sense that it is developing and operating various educational platforms for reforestation and monitoring of mangrove forests in Vietnam and improving environmental awareness of local residents three years after its establishment.
SK Innovation was highly praised for continuing the mangrove forest restoration project despite difficulties in local planting activities due to the impact of COVID-19.
Since 2018, SK Innovation has been promoting the planting of mangrove seedlings to respond to climate change and preserve biodiversity in Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam.
As a result, from 2018 to August this year, SK Innovation planted a total of 480,000 mangrove seedlings in a mangrove forest with an area of about 116ha in Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam.
It is unusual for a company to restore more than 100 hectares of mangrove forest through four years of climate change response efforts.
It is expected that the mangrove forests created by SK Innovation in Vietnam will absorb about 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Starting with Vietnam, SK Innovation is expanding its global mangrove forest restoration project to countries such as Myanmar. Last year, SK Innovation planted a total of 45,000 mangrove seedlings on a total floor area of 18ha in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, the mangrove forest restoration project of SK Innovation is highly evaluated as an excellent case for sustainable development and environmental protection of the forest restoration project by global environmental groups and tree-related companies such as the United States and France.
