Korea is now a powerhouse of the global manufacturing industry with numerous domestic components and materials known to be the world's best.

Public and private sectors are now cooperating to further take the components and material industry to the next level. Many projects been started to develop core components and materials as Korea's new strengths. This is not just replacing the existing foreign components with Korean ones. For the future of the manufacturing business depends on materials and parts, success of these projects will be the growth engine of Korea's manufacturing industry.

As Korean semiconductor and display companies are starting to hold a leadership position in the global market, some insist that Korea has to foster supporting industries in order to diversify the portfolio of exports. To foster the strength in the domestic material and component industry cooperation between government and industry is much needed. The market structure, however, which consists of mostly small-sized companies a ways off from being competitive. The government came up with a comprehensive plan to enhance the industrial competitiveness which promotes domestic production of parts and components, which has been under way since last year.

Government's support

Since the size of the domestic components market has grown during the past several years, the government is planning to decrease of its trade dependence on Japan and enter the global market. Initiation of an innovative strategies for entering a new material market, relies on development of ten key material, which should have an impact early, positioning Korea to lead the global market. Localization of materials will also aid the domestic semiconductor and display industries, consequently  "development package" has elements that focus additional support for those producers. For example, some elements used in these industries can be developed in a cooperative environment, such as producers of a glass plate, an OLED panel and an undiluted glass chemical working in tandem to improve their processes.

In the telecommunications equipment field, only Samsung and LG, who mostly carry finished goods like cell phones have been drawing attention so far on the global stage. Other domestic companies, however, with materials and parts used in the telecom sector are expected to grow to supply a 12-trillion won market by 2015.

Competition

According to the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology, Korea's related technology is 1.01 year away from the U.S scoring 92.7%, following Europe (97.5%) and Japan (94.3%). But, when it comes to the system area such as the communications network and key modules, the technology gap is somewhat wider. If you look at the world-leading companies, Nokia is holding a dominant position in the world premium market and the low-priced cell phone market with price competitiveness through its key fundamental technology, WCDMA. Qualcomm and Ericsson are focusing on the standardization of next-generation parts while Apple highlights its graphic interface and design while Google boasts its WiFi gig. Here, Korean components and materials can take an essential role.

To deal with this situation, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of Korea has decided to change the way of supporting related industries. So far, the government has supported companies that requested it. From now on, however, only those technologies with the potential to create a great ripple effect and potential of future self-reliance will be benefited with government aid. The strategy to develop 10 key materials to dominate the world market is one of the plans, which also shows that the industry, the academy, the research, and the government have all decided to join forces to foster the related fields in the long term.

Essential components and material companies are here at KES 2010!

Optics

The world's leading fiber-optic A/V connectivity solution provider, Optics Co. Ltd., is present at KES 2010. Some of Optics products are Digital Visual Interface (DVI) for PC-based graphic interface and the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) for digital TV industry. Their connectivity solutions also support Serial Digital Interface (SDI) for Broadcast systems, the Universal Serial Bus (USB) for PC Peripherals and the IEEE 1394 (Firewire) for digital appliance interconnection.

ISP Co., Ltd., a pioneer of X-ray technology at home, is present at KES 2010. Check out XRF on the show floor. ISP is on the verge of releasing a new instrument that will measure the thickness of a coating using X-Ray.

ISP at KES 2010 will display the technology that take advantage of the fact that each element of sample will emit a unique fluorescent X-ray when the X-ray is applied. The Hazardous Materials Analyzer iEDX-100A fluorescent spectrometer will perform a quantitative/qualitative analysis of the elements of the sample, according to the fluorescent X-ray response. Their analyzer performs unparalleled and flawless analysis. When precision monitoring of toxic elements is crucial to your business, they have the solution and they back their product.

Piezoelectric Technology Co., Ltd. at KES shows Piezoelectric actuators that produce a small displacement with a high force capability when voltage is applied.  Piezoelectricity is the charge which accumulates in certain solid materials, notably crystals, certain ceramics, and biological matter such as bone, DNA, and various proteins in response to applied mechanical strain. "So the idea is that you mash one of these crystals or ceramics and it will generate a measurable amount of electricity. It works the other way as well," said the spokesman of Piezoelectric.

Eretec Inc. at KES brings solution to costly EMC testing.  Eretec supplies all kinds of testing equipment and facilities, measurement systems and software worldwide. They have developed the EMC measurement chamber, antenna measurement chamber (Cell phone, Radar, Aircraft, Military use, etc.), EMC/Antenna/Transient measurement system and Software, and so on. Some products or services are sources foreign companies or but most are developed and manufactured their own company.
