LS Cable & System announced on October 13 that it has recently succeeded in developing a next-generation superconducting cable.

Superconducting cables have almost no power loss during transmission and are capable of large-capacity transmission. Since it does not generate electromagnetic waves, it is called an eco-friendly energy product.

The next-generation product developed this time has dramatically improved the structure of the superconducting layer, increasing the amount of power transmission by 20% or more, while reducing production costs by more than 10%.

LS Cable & System developed a superconducting cable at the Gochang Power Test Center of Korea Electric Power Corporation and acquired the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard through R&D for about two years with the Korea Electric Power Research Institute. LS Cable & System is the first to acquire international certifications worldwide.

KEPCO plans to apply this next-generation model in earnest to the superconducting platform business starting next year.

Following the world's first commercialization of superconducting cables in 2019, LS Cable & System is expected to lead the commercialization of next-generation products.

“The superconducting platform business can reduce the size of substations to less than 1/10 of the existing ones and reduce the construction cost by more than 30%,” said an LS Cable & System official. “Usage will increase mainly in urban areas where it is difficult to expand power facilities.”

“Thanks to the global ESG management trend, the superconducting business is expected to expand mainly in North America and Europe,” said Myung Roh-hyun, CEO of LS Cable & System. “Based on our commercialization experience in Korea, we will make efforts to advance into the global market.”
