[Discussion] Technics and Civilization
The issue of climate change or anthropogenic climate change is a major issue in society today along with the global, technological system, particularly that of energy production, transportation, and agriculture. Glasgow has now ended and many are left with deflated hopes and increased fears about the outcome and what next. Hopes that were illusory before the meeting are now seen for what they were. To understand the conditions today, I based this discussion on the work of Lewis Mumford and what led many to consider him to be “a scholar of cosmic cultural reach and conspicuous public conscience, a distinguished critic of life, arts and letters, an unequaled observer of cities and civilizations.'' In this video, we take up the history and philosophy of the matter of urbanization or civilization from a perspective of ecophilosophy. Joining me is Derrick Jensen, who has been called the poet-philosopher of the ecological movement, and Lierre Keith, who has been outspoken concerning green rhetoric, agribusiness, and industrial civilization. We begin with a revisit of the history of western civilization going far back to the Epic of Gilgamesh and then bring the discussion up to the present, particularly concerning the conditions of technical society and industrial civilization and then hopes for meeting the enormous challenges of today.
Lierre Keith is a thinker on topics ranging from biodiversity to urbanization to feminism and is co-author of Deep Green Resistance and Bright Green Lies. Derrick Jensen is the founder of Deep Green Resistance and is the author of numerous books including the recent Bright Green Lies with Lierre Keith and Max Wilbert
Layne Hartsell is a research professor at the Center for Science, Technology, and Society, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, and at the Asia Institute, Washington, D.C., Berlin, and Tokyo.
