SK Group announced today that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won will help accelerate SK Telecom's AI business and digital innovation.
The company added that Chey will not sit on the board, but as an unregistered chairman, he will act as a facilitator for management and board to drive fundamental innovation.
Chairman Chey has been contemplating taking over as SK Telecom's chairman, and he made a decision after meeting with SK Telecom's outside directors and other board members in advance to seek their opinions.
Chairman Chey posted an article on the internal bulletin board saying, "Innovation as a global AI company is a task that cannot be postponed any longer, and there are only a few opportunities and time left for the challenge."
Meanwhile, at "CES 2022" held in Las Vegas early last month, SK Telecom announced that it would form an SK ICT alliance with the group's ICT affiliates such as SK Hynix and SK Square and establish an American corporation to advance into the global market of AI semiconductor "SAPEON".
SK Telecom also plans to introduce a new AI assistant "Apollo" (tentative name), a service that creates a character avatar on a smartphone and uses it like an AI assistant.
