Samsung Heavy Industries announced today that it has won an order for two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. With this order, Samsung Heavy Industries achieved 38% of its annual order target.
Samsung Heavy Industries received an order for three LNG carriers worth 860 billion won on May 17, followed by two additional orders on the same day, recording a performance of 1.45 trillion won over two days.
Currently, the LNG carrier market is expanding due to the increase in global LNG production and the impact of replacement demand due to the strengthening of environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)," said an official from Samsung Heavy Industries. “The price of LNG carriers is rising because shipbuilders do not have enough dock space.”
Meanwhile, according to Clarkson Research, a British shipbuilding and shipping market analysis company, the shipbuilding price of a 174,000 m3 class LNG carrier rose by about 20% from $186 million at the end of 2020 to $224 million at the end of April this year.
