Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced today that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the introduction of new nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan on June 28 with Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Limited Liability Partnership (KNPP), a new nuclear power plant ordering company in Kazakhstan.
The two companies agreed to cooperate in areas such as the development of new nuclear power plants, application of nuclear technology, human resource training, and acceptance of residents.
The signing ceremony was attended by the KNPP CEO and the Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, who visited Korea for a tour of the nuclear power plant industry.
KNPP has been evaluating the possibility of building nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan since September last year.
In addition, it is preparing to build two new nuclear power plants with a total capacity of up to 2,800 MW, with the goal of starting construction in 2029 and completing construction in 2035.
After submitting a price technology proposal for the construction of two 1,000 MW and 1,400 MW nuclear power plants to KNPP in 2019, KHNP has maintained a continuous cooperative relationship.
With this MoU signing, cooperation between the two companies for the introduction of new nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan is expected to accelerate.
Meanwhile, KHNP said Kazakhstan's deputy minister of energy plans to visit Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6 under construction on June 29.
