Woori Financial Group announced today that Woori Financial Group Chairman Son Tae-seung visited Europe for three days from October 4 to discuss international cooperation for response to the climate crisis and natural recovery.
Chairman Son received invitations from ESG international organizations such as United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), United Nations Environment Program Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
First, Chairman Son met Ibrahim Thiaw, UN Deputy Secretary-General and UNCCD Secretary-General in Germany to discuss sustainable land and forest management activities.
"Land is our valuable natural asset, and the degradation of land affects not only mankind, but also the ecosystem on which all living things depend," said Thiaw UN Deputy Secretary-General. "Although Woori Financial Group is a private company, it is very hopeful that Woori Financial Group has provided cooperation and support to prevent land degradation.”
Chairman Son met Eric Usher, CEO of UNEP FI at the UNEP FI headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss international cooperation for response to the global climate crisis and natural recovery, and joined the Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA).
NZBA is a global interbank leadership alliance with the goal of becoming Net-Zero by 2050, with 117 banks from 41 countries participating.
After that, Chairman Son visited IUCN and WWF headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, and met with IUCN Deputy Secretary-General Lee Seong-ah and WWF Secretary-General Marco Lambertini, respectively. He promised support for various programs to overcome the climate crisis in a nature-based solution and conserve biodiversity.
“In the recent unstable environment such as the global energy crisis and inflation, solidarity and cooperation with the international community are becoming increasingly important," in a meeting with global ESG leaders, Chairman Son said. "We hope that solidarity and cooperation with ESG international organizations will serve as a foundation to save our planet.”
