[Nacka, Sweden] Edwards, part of the Atlas Copco Group, is strengthening its presence in the US by building a new manufacturing facility for dry vacuum pumps used in the manufacture of semiconductors. The new factory will be situated in Genesee County, New York, USA.

Phase one will be a MUSD 127 project to construct a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of approximately 240,000 sq. ft. (22,000 m2). In total, over the next seven years, the project is expected to amount to MUSD 319 and create around 600 skills-based jobs. The new site will be in the Western New York Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park, (WNY STAMP) in Genesee County, New York.

The recent increase in demand for semiconductors has seen governments around the globe recognize the strategic importance of the industry, with large investments being committed to ensure a stable and resilient semiconductor infrastructure.

“Against a backdrop of growing demand, clearly showing a greater need for investment in manufacturing capabilities that are located close to our customers, we continue to commit to significant investment in our operational footprint,” said Geert Follens, Business Area President Vacuum Technique. “We look forward to welcoming many new US employees into the Atlas Copco Group culture of lifelong learning and innovation.”

This new investment represents an increase in local production to support Edwards’ US customers and ensure the supply chain capacity needed in the semiconductor industry. Localizing manufacturing in the US will also enable a significant reduction in the carbon emissions arising from international freight.

“I am thrilled to welcome Edwards’s new manufacturing facility and its 600 new jobs to Western New York and commend them for this significant investment and expansion at the STAMP campus,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer.

The factory is planned to be fully operational in late 2024 and will provide an addition in capacity to Edwards’ existing dry pump factories. The new facility is planned to align with the LEED green building certification system and will be powered using 100% renewable energy sources.

“I am excited to welcome Edwards Vacuum to Genesee County and look forward to working with them, as well as our local, state, and federal partners, as they make New York their home,” said New York State Governor Kathy Hochul.
