LS Cable & System, together with LS Alsco, an affiliate, will expand the aluminum new material business.
LS Cable & System announced today that its new high-strength aluminum material has been given the unique alloy number AA8031 by the American Aluminum Association (AA).
The company has strengthened the strength, which has been pointed out as a weakness of existing aluminum materials, by more than 40% and improved flexibility.
In addition, when the strength of aluminum is strengthened, the disadvantage of low conductivity is also improved.
LS Cable & System expects that the market will expand as aluminum is lighter than copper, replacing copper in industries where weight reduction is important, such as automobiles.
Changing the conductors of automotive wires from copper to aluminum reduces the weight of the wire by more than 40%. The weight of the wire, which is 25kg in total per vehicle, is reduced to about 15kg, which has the effect of improving fuel efficiency.
The company plans to expand supply to electric vehicles and wind power generators with LS Alsco, a company specializing in high-strength aluminum materials.
“Unlike patents, it is not easy to acquire AA because commercialization and duration are important screening criteria," said Kim Sang-gyeom, a researcher at LS Cable & System’s Basic Technology Research Institute. "Since 2019, AA8031 has proven its quality by being commercialized on automobile wires of Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors.”
