Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) joined the UN Energy 24/7 Carbon Free Energy Compact on March 9.
24/7 means to use carbon-free energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It is being supervised by Sustainable Energy for All and High-level dialogue on Energy under the UN, including UN Energy, and a total of 111 companies and organizations, including Google and the World Nuclear Association (WNA), have joined and are participating.
As RE100, which covers all electricity with renewable energy, is not realistic and is a huge cost burden for Korean companies, the government is reviewing CF100, which includes nuclear power, as an alternative.
Accordingly, KHNP will become the first Korean public energy company to join the 24/7 carbon-free energy agreement and actively participate in the government's efforts to introduce CF100.
In order to activate the CF100 in the future, it is necessary to introduce a carbon-free electricity trading system in various ways using nuclear power plants, including nuclear PPA, nuclear power certificates, and private equity investment.
“As well as stable power supply through safe nuclear power plant operation, practical carbon neutrality is achieved through the timely completion of construction nuclear power plants and the expansion of clean energy capacity through the construction of new renewable energy plants, and the development of new technologies such as i-SMR and clean hydrogen.
