LG Display introduced a novel foldable display at CES 2023 that can fold and unfold the screen in half.

LG Display's foldable OLED, which transforms the existing flat display into a new form factor, attracted the attention of many foreign media, including Engadget, a tech media outlet that highly evaluated the completeness of its foldable technology through CES 2023.

LG Display's OLED has a self-luminous structure without a backlight, so it can realize various form factors such as foldable, bendable, and rollable. Utilizing these characteristics of OLED, LG Display developed a solution with a foldable function on a 17-inch screen.

The 17-inch foldable OLED, which can be applied to OLED’s unique high-definition and total touch solutions such as hand touch and pen touch, is used as a monitor for watching videos by unfolding the screen normally, and when necessary, folds the screen and provides a keyboard function that appears on the screen. It is a multi-purpose display that can perform the roles of multiple IT devices, such as using it as a laptop, with one product.

In addition, the screen crease, which is one of the biggest challenges of a foldable device that folds in the middle of the screen, is almost invisible.

Another foldable OLED solution from LG Display is an 8.03-inch 360-degree foldable OLED that can be folded and unfolded 360 degrees.

Unlike foldable devices that apply an in-folding method that only folds inward, this product even adopts an out-folding method that allows the screen to be folded outward. Not only can the screen be used vertically or horizontally wider than the existing mobile screen size, but it can also be used flexibly according to the needs of various users, such as using a dual screen or out-folding to use both screens.

In addition, the 8.03-inch 360-degree foldable OLED implements a relatively thin device by applying a single panel and shows excellent durability. This product, which implements a folding structure that stably supports the panel, boasts durability that does not affect screen wrinkles even after folding and unfolding the screen more than 200,000 times at room temperature.

This can be converted into unbreakable durability even if the product is used for more than 5 years when folded 100 times a day (100 times a day X 365 days X 5 years = 182,500 times). In addition to this, foldable OLEDs go through extreme temperature and humidity tests. It maintains a smooth screen with no traces of wrinkles even after bi-directional folding more than 50,000 times in an environment with a low temperature of -20 degrees Celsius, a high temperature of 60 degrees Celsius, and a humidity of 90%.

LG Display has completely changed the display formula, which was previously only available in one form, with foldable OLED, suggesting that multiple IT devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones are no longer needed in a bag.
