MeTech(MeTech, CEO Charles Park), a startup specializing in livestock methane gas research, announced that it has succeeded in developing a methane reduction capsule that can reduce the amount of methane gas (CH4) emitted by more than 60%, after two years of research and development. Real-time data showing that methane gas is actually being reduced and the methane reduction capsule were first released on the 3rd.

Methane gas emitted from cows is a serious issue worldwide. According to a UN report, methane gas emitted by livestock accounts for 18% of greenhouse gases that cause global warming, which is far greater than the 13.5% of emissions from all transportation, including cars.

According to Charles Park, CEO of MeTech, "The methane reduction capsule developed by MeTech automatically reduces the methane concentration of cows by inserting the capsule through their mouth and attaching it to their rumen. Real-time information about methane reduction can be obtained through IoT communication."

On average, dairy cows produce about 250-500 liters of methane per day in their rumen, while beef cattle can produce up to 600 liters per day. The methane gas concentration in the rumen can be as high as 20,000-30,000 ppm. One cow emits about 200 liters of methane per day, equivalent to 4,000 liters of carbon dioxide emissions.

When cows consume feed, they emit methane gas, which on average amounts to 100-150 liters of per day.  This represents 70-80% of their total daily emissions. The key technology is the methane reduction capsule attached to the rumen, which automatically operates one hour before the cow consume feed, reducing the methane gas concentration as much as possible while minimizing the amount of methane emitted.

The experiment showed that the methane gas concentration can be reduced from 8,000ppm to 1,000ppm in just 30 minutes using the methane reduction capsule. The maximum lifespan of the capsule is approximately 1.5 years, and an additional capsule can be administered once the first one has reached the end of its lifespan. There are plans to develop an automatic release system for the capsule in the future.

Charles, the CEO, said, "I've dreamed of developing a methane reduction device in the livestock industry for 11 years. I put in a lot of effort to solve the issue of methane emissions in cow as a technology. After several failures, we succeeded in developing this innovative technology in just two years. I'm extremely proud to have developed the world's first innovative technology.”

Furthermore, Charles stated, "We are currently in the process of applying for patents in 18 countries. The methane reduction capsule is scheduled to be released from the second half of this year after additional clinical trials and certification. We are also collaborating on joint projects with the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and others. We will do our best to solve the global livestock greenhouse gas issue with the methane reduction capsules.”
