Practical people carry around netbooks due to its size and affordability. Now, good news comes to those who also wish to design their netbook to meet their specific personal preferences. Google announced that it has launched its Chrome Operating System (OS) explaining, "For application developers, the web is a platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. Of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standard browser available on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform."
Although the OS is specifically targeted to netbooks, Google announced, "Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems." Foreshadowing that indeed this system will eventually be available for any type of computer. For now, we suspect that netbooks will be flying off the shelves.
Chrome OS will be featured in Acer and Samsung netbooks by mid-2011. For those who purchase these, they will be the first to enjoy the fast boot up speed of 10 seconds. Google's goal is to increase the speed over time, so finally users will experience the speeds they crave. In addition, the internet speed will be stunningly fast. "Speed, simplicity and security are key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds," Google stated.
Netbooks will be offered in the price range of $300-$400 which is typical for any netbook. This is exciting news for those developers out there searching for a truly open-source netbook at a reasonable price.
