SK Telecom (SKT) announced on April 20th that it will help restore the communication network by providing its communication equipment to Turkiye, which was severely damaged by the earthquake in February.
The request for support came from Turkcell, the largest telecommunications company in Turkiye, through the GSMA/NGMN community, an alliance of global telecommunications operators.
Through an agreement between SKT and Turkcell, SKT delivered an external enclosure, which is part of Turkcell's telecommunications equipment, to Turkey.
The equipment delivered is the WCDMA standard/expandable enclosure, which is used to protect the internal WCDMA base station from external environments such as weather, dust, and bad weather and ensure stable operation. The enclosure has a capacity to cover a network area 34 times the size of Yeouido, Seoul.
According to SKT, the WCDMA standard/expandable external enclosure was delivered to Turkiye because it is compatible with Turkcell's existing network equipment and can directly help in network recovery.
To support this equipment, SKT supplied external enclosures scattered throughout the country, including Gyeonggi, Gyeongsang, Chungcheong, and Jeju. The supplied equipment was quickly and safely delivered to Turkcell through air transportation.
Turkcell expressed its gratitude for SKT's communication equipment support, stating that it would be of great help in restoring its communication network.
“Wireless communication infrastructure is an essential element in our lives, and once the communication network is restored, the restoration of other social infrastructures will also speed up," said Ryu Jeong-hwan, head of SKT Infrastructure Strategic Technology CT (Center). “We decided to provide communication equipment to help the people of Turkiye recover quickly.”
