LG Display announced today that two of its research papers have been recognized as Distinguished Papers by the Society for Information Display (SID).

The papers, titled "Ultra-Large OLED Display" and "Stretchable Display," were acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the field.

The first paper, presented under the theme of "A Novel Ultra-Large Size OLED Display for Premium TVs," received the Excellence Paper Award. Led by Dr. Hong-jae Shin, the research team from LG Display showcased key technologies that enabled the creation of ultra-large OLED displays measuring 80 inches and above. This achievement reaffirms LG Display's position as a leader in OLED innovation.

Overcoming the challenge of uniformly expressing high-quality images on larger screens, LG Display spearheaded the development of a series of ultra-large OLED TV panels. They made significant advancements in panel and driving technologies, improved the performance of organic light-emitting components, and minimized bezels.

The company's efforts resulted in the production of the 88-inch 8K OLED TV panel in 2018 and the introduction of the largest 97-inch OLED TV panels last year. LG Display is currently the only company capable of mass-producing ultra-large OLED panels measuring 80 inches and above.

Furthermore, LG Display plans to showcase its third-generation OLED TV panel technology, known as 'META technology,' during SID 2023. These OLED panels offer the industry's highest brightness of 2,100 nits, making them ideal for ultra-large TVs.

Additionally, they demonstrate a remarkable 22 percent improvement in energy efficiency, further solidifying LG Display's commitment to innovation.

The second Excellence Paper Award went to a research team led by the Precedence Technology Laboratory at LG Display for their paper on 'High-Resolution Active-Matrix Micro-LED Stretchable Displays.' Stretchable displays have gained significant attention as a next-generation display technology due to their ability to be extended, folded, and twisted.

LG Display unveiled the industry's first 12-inch Stretchable display last year, which can be stretched by up to 20 percent while maintaining full-color RGB and a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch (ppi), comparable to standard monitors. The award-winning research showcased advancements in resolution, flexibility, and reliability, bringing stretchable displays closer to commercialization.

LG Display will present its latest research findings at Display Week 2023, taking place from May 21 to 26 at the LA Convention Center. The company will share 15 research papers that highlight significant discoveries in next-generation displays, including OLED and microLED technologies.

LG Display also plans to unveil its latest cutting-edge technologies at SID 2023, including its new OLED technology and third-generation OLED TV panels based on "META Technology."

“We will continue to maintain and expand our competitive advantage by developing cutting-edge displays that provide innovative customer value, particularly in the field of large-sized and high-resolution displays, thereby widening the technological gap between us and our competitors,” said Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President at LG Display.
