Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) recently participated in the SITDEF 2023 defense exhibition held in Lima, Peru from May 18 to 21.

The exhibition, hosted by the Ministry of National Defense of Peru, is a significant defense industry event in Latin America that takes place every two years.

KAI showcased a range of its domestic aircraft platforms during the exhibition. The highlight was the FA-50 light fighter, which serves as the company's flagship aircraft. Also on display was the KF-21 Korean fighter, which recently underwent interim combat suitability testing, and the LAH light armed helicopter, set to begin mass production soon.

Peru, which currently operates the KT-1P basic trainer, serves as a strategic marketing base for KAI in targeting the Central and South American market. KAI exported 20 KT-1P trainers to Peru in 2012 and subsequently established a local office, fostering an ongoing cooperative relationship with the country while expanding its marketing efforts to neighboring nations.

The FA-50, with its recent success in global exports, has gained attention as the ideal solution to replace aging aircraft in the Peruvian Air Force. During the exhibition, KAI focused on promoting the excellence of the FA-50 through meetings with various government officials, including the Peruvian Air Force General. They also discussed plans for industrial cooperation with local aviation companies.

Latin America presents numerous potential demand countries seeking to replace fighters and helicopters that have been in service for over 30 years. In this regard, KAI engaged in discussions with senior Air Force officials from Colombia, Uruguay, and Mexico, tailoring proposals to suit the requirements of each country in the emerging market.

"With the Peruvian Air Force operating the KT-1P reliably, neighboring countries are showing increased interest in Korean aircraft. Just as we successfully exported to Malaysia in February, completing the ASEAN Belt in Southeast Asia," said a KAI official. "We will concentrate our marketing efforts on the Central and South American market, utilizing Peru as a base, to expand our exports to neighboring countries."

Meanwhile, KAI succeeded in exporting 48 FA-50 units to Poland at the end of last year, and continues to export 18 FA-50 units to Malaysia in February of this year, drawing attention in the global market as a leading player in K-Defense.

The company plans to expand exports of domestic aircraft to Africa and Europe as well as Central and South America, and plans to challenge the US market where 500 advanced trainers and tactical introductory aircraft are required.

When the T-50 enters the US market, it is expected to have market dominance of more than 1,300 units, accounting for 50% of the overseas advanced trainer and light fighter market.
