The Ministry of Environment signed a voluntary agreement with Samsung Electronics on providing air pollution information through smartphone. The signing ceremony was participated by 20 including vice-minister of Environment Mun Jeong-ho, vice-president of Samsung Electronics Lee Ho-su and chairman of the Korea Environment Corporation Park Seung-hwan in Gwacheon on December 21, 2010.
With the agreement, air pollution information, which has been provided through the internet, can be offered through GALAXY smartphone and GALAXY tab as an application 'air quality of my neighborhood'.
As smartphone users are drastically increasing, the Ministry of Environment and Samsung Electronics committed to provide efficiently the information on air pollution by smartphone application.
The Korea Environment Corporation has provided data on air pollution in real time through the website www.airkorea.or.kr. The website provides information on pollutants including PM, ozone, carbon monoxide and sulfurous acid gas, measured at 236 measurement stations in 62 cities. The number of visitor to the website has continuously increased from 160,911 in 2007 to 303,903 in 2008 and 403,903 in 2009.
The information on air pollution in smartphone is shown by colors of traffic lights according to the status of pollutants. In addition, the application provides air pollution calendar and air pollution watch so that users can check air pollution in real time by date and time.
With the agreement, more people will be able to approach air pollution information in an easy and rapid way.
