LG Electronics (LG) is strengthening its advanced materials business by leveraging an in-house developed antimicrobial glass powder and marine glass.

These innovative products not only offer unique benefits but also align with LG's commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management.

LG's antimicrobial glass powder combines the inherent properties of glass such as chemical and thermal stability, durability, and resistance to discoloration with excellent hygiene benefits. Since 2022, LG has been using this powder in various home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners.

By incorporating the antimicrobial glass powder into the manufacturing of plastic parts that frequently come into contact with human skin, LG ensures a more hygienic user experience. Leveraging its expertise in glass composition design and understanding of the home appliance environment, LG's glass powder demonstrates anti-fungal and antibacterial properties when combined with materials like plastics, fibers, paints, and laminates.

Another breakthrough from LG is the marine glass, which utilizes the company's precise release technology for glass material. When dissolved in water, the marine glass transforms into inorganic ions that facilitate the restoration of marine ecosystems by promoting the growth of microalgae and algae.

This glass material also serves as a sustainable alternative to red clay, commonly used to mitigate the ecological damage caused by red tides. Unlike clay, LG's marine glass dissolves in water, preventing secondary contamination of the marine environment.

With the antimicrobial glass powder as a foundation, LG's advanced materials business embraces a new concept aligned with the company's Better Life for All ESG vision. In addition to expanding its operations in advanced materials, LG aims to contribute to the restoration and protection of the Earth's oceans and waterways. By venturing into marine ecosystem restoration, LG strives to create a sustainable future.

LG's research on glass powder dates back to 1996, and the company now holds 219 patents related to this field. The production of antimicrobial glass powder takes place at LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea, where 4,500 tons of the material are manufactured annually.

“LG is committed to expanding the scope of application for its glass powder beyond that of other glass materials,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We believe our advanced materials business can help lead the way to a sustainable future, becoming a new growth engine and a central component of LG’s ESG management portfolio.”
