Hyundai Engineering has made significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI)-based design automation technologies, particularly in the fields of architecture and plant design.

On May 31, Hyundai Engineering announced the development of an "Automatic Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) recognition system" using AI. P&ID is a crucial design drawing that contains essential process information provided by the ordering company at the project's inception.

The P&ID automatic recognition system utilizes AI Deep Learning and Computer Vision to recognize P&ID drawings and automatically generate outputs such as piping and instrumentation lists and CAD drawings.

To validate its effectiveness, Hyundai Engineering is currently conducting verification tests on projects such as the Indonesian petrochemical complex and the Saudi Zapura gas treatment facility, which are already in progress. The company aims to implement this system within the current year.

By employing this system, all information can be swiftly recognized and extracted within one to two minutes per drawing, significantly reducing the time required compared to manual analysis and information extraction by designers.

The system also enhances the accuracy of drawing analysis. Internal tests have shown that the recognition accuracy of this system surpasses 95%. Designers using this system can anticipate a notable increase in accuracy. Additionally, the implementation of this system is expected to reduce work costs by more than 50% through minimizing human resources and outsourcing expenses.

The Smart Technology Center, responsible for the integrated development of smart construction technology in Hyundai Engineering, developed this system. The company believes that, due to its proprietary technology, there is substantial potential for technology expansion, including the utilization of drawing and image recognition technologies in other business domains.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Engineering is actively engaged in researching and developing AI-based design automation technology. In the plant sector, the company achieved a significant milestone in Korea by developing an "AI-based automatic design system for plant steel structures" and submitting a patent application. This system allows designers to complete the steel structure design within 10 minutes by inputting basic design conditions such as building size, load, and shape.

In the architecture sector, Hyundai Engineering is also working on "AI-based apartment landscape design automation technology," which proposes draft designs for outdoor spaces in residential complexes based on entered design criteria.

Additionally, the company is researching and developing over 10 design automation technologies across various work areas, including "2D drawing to 3D modeling automatic conversion."
