LG U+, a South Korean telecommunications company, announced on June 1 a partnership with Ericsson-LG, a prominent telecommunication equipment manufacturer.

The collaboration aims to demonstrate the capabilities of next-generation core technologies, incorporating functions such as AI and Quality of Service (QoS) into the network, while also working together to develop future network technologies.

The joint effort between the two companies involves configuring the network in the form of an Application Programming Interface (API), allowing for the seamless integration of various technologies like AI, machine learning, and QoS with 5G networks. By adopting an API-based network configuration, it becomes easier to connect the network with other services, enabling the provision of specialized functions beyond basic network connectivity.

LG U+ and Ericsson LG have applied an API that combines QoS guarantees with 5G networks to real-world use cases such as automatic parking services and disaster drone services. This successful implementation showcased autonomous vehicles accomplishing self-parking tasks and drones transmitting real-time control images, demonstrating the low latency and high reliability of the network.

Furthermore, the collaboration highlighted the ability of autonomous vehicles to dynamically adjust their routes to avoid congested areas using a 5G network equipped with AI-based congestion prediction functions.

If this technology is commercialized, app developers can leverage third-party API services to develop new applications or enhance existing ones, even without extensive network expertise. This is particularly beneficial for small and medium-sized app developers who may lack core technology development capabilities, as they can easily and conveniently utilize API-based networks with the desired functionalities. LG U+ anticipates that this innovation will activate the domestic app ecosystem and enhance the experience for corporate customers.

Moving forward, LG U+ plans to continue its development and demonstration of technologies in collaboration with Ericsson LG and various other companies. The focus will be on advancing next-generation core technologies, which are crucial for establishing future network infrastructure such as 5G-Advanced and 6G.

"We will continue to conduct research to preemptively secure next-generation network technologies that can provide excellent experiences to customers in the future," said Lee Sang-heon, head of NW's prior development at LG U+.

"It is expected that various 5G services will be discovered in the future through the evolution of networks using Open API and AI," said Cho In-sook, technical director of CSS (Cloud Software & Services).
