LG Display has announced that Dr. Hyun-Chul Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of the Small Display Business Group, has been honored with the prestigious 2023 SID Fellow Award.
This esteemed recognition acknowledges Dr. Choi's exceptional scientific contributions that have significantly propelled advancements in the display industry.
Each year, the Society for Information Display (SID) carefully selects Fellows through a rigorous evaluation process conducted by a committee, along with recommendations from previous Fellows. These Fellows are chosen from the top 0.1% of SID members who have been nominated for their exceptional research achievements, making it a highly coveted accolade.
According to the SID, Dr. Choi has played a crucial leadership role in the development of highly efficient and long-lasting OLED displays, utilizing a groundbreaking tandem structure. This technological breakthrough has not only contributed to the success of OLED TVs and automotive displays but has also facilitated the commercialization of IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology for TVs and high-performance IT products.
With an impressive tenure spanning three decades, Dr. Choi has overseen the development of innovative products and fundamental technologies that have significantly prolonged the lifespan of OLED displays. The introduction of the Tandem OLED structure, which incorporates two stacked organic light-emitting layers to enhance panel brightness, and the implementation of a cutting-edge display technology that converts hydrogen in organic light elements into stable deuterium, have been instrumental in achieving these remarkable advancements.
Thanks to Dr. Choi's visionary contributions, OLED technology has transcended beyond the realms of TVs and smartphones, penetrating new sectors such as IT and automotive. His tireless efforts and groundbreaking innovations have propelled the widespread adoption of OLED displays across various industries.
Prior to these noteworthy achievements, Dr. Choi spearheaded the development of LG Display's state-of-the-art LCD technology known as IPS (In-Plane Switching). This groundbreaking advancement greatly enhanced the viewing angles of LCDs, thereby playing a vital role in the commercialization of high-performance TVs and IT LCD panels.
Dr. Choi will be officially granted the membership grade of Fellow during the upcoming SID Display Week 2023, to be held in Los Angeles.
