LS Cable & System is taking decisive steps in the development of multi-core optical fiber technology for advanced communication systems such as 5G and 6G.
LS Cable & System announced on June 13 that it had signed an MOU with the Korea Photonics Technology Institute (KOPTI) for cooperation in next-generation optical communication technology.
The two companies plan to expand optical communication technology cooperation and human exchange, starting with the development of multi-core optical fiber. Multi-core optical fiber is a next-generation product that dramatically increases the amount of data transmission compared to the current single-core optical fiber.
Traditionally, optical cables employ a single core wire, which limits the amount of data that can be transmitted. However, by increasing the number of cores within the optical fiber, the capacity for data transmission can be dramatically improved, leading to an exponential increase in communication speeds.
“Multicore optical fiber is so difficult that only a few European and Japanese companies have succeeded in developing it," said Lee In-ho, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of LS Cable & System's Technology Development Headquarters. "We have an ability to overcome the technical challenges associated with multi-core optical fiber development.”
LS Cable & System expects that the demand for communication cables capable of transmitting large amounts of data will surge as the construction of high-speed communication infrastructure expands worldwide. Accordingly, it is expanding related businesses by acquiring a stake in KT Submarine, a construction company specializing in submarine optical cables.
