Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) has received the first AH-6 helicopter fuselage from Korean Air, marking a significant milestone in their partnership.
In December 2021, Korean Air inked a contract with Boeing to produce eight fuselages for AH-6 helicopters, which would later undergo final assembly by BDS.
Korean Air boasts a stellar reputation in helicopter manufacturing, thanks to its extensive experience and expertise. Notably, the airline was the pioneer in manufacturing the 500MD helicopter in Korea. Between 1977 and 1988, Korean Air manufactured and sold 309 500MD helicopters to various military, public institutions, and private companies. Additionally, the company exported 516 500MD fuselages and recently achieved success with an unmanned 500MD project.
The production of helicopter fuselages demands advanced and specialized technology, particularly for components such as the canopy and landing gear. Korean Air collaborated closely with its partner, Kencoa Aerospace, to ensure the successful delivery of the first fuselage.
Korean Air has plans to expand its collaboration with Boeing. The future entails strengthening overseas sales and venturing into new aircraft development and manufacturing business, cementing Korean Air's position in the industry.
