Hyundai Engineering announced its victory in the "2023 Red Dot Design Award" on July 7th.
Securing the coveted Winner title in the Public Space category of the design concept division, Hyundai Engineering submitted its innovative creation, "Cloud Shade," a facility specializing in landscaping.
The Red Dot Design Award, recognized as one of the world's top three design competitions alongside Germany's "iF Design Award" and the United States' "IDEA Design Award," is organized by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany.
"Cloud Shade," conceived by Hyundai Engineering, features an outdoor corridor shaped like a magnificent cloud. This unique structure offers visitors the experience of being beneath a grand 26-meter-long cloud while providing respite from the sun's rays, effectively creating an immersive natural oasis.
One notable characteristic of "Cloud Shade" is its roof, constructed by overlapping two layers of perforated boards with multiple holes. Unlike conventional rest facilities that completely block sunlight, this design allows ample natural light to penetrate the structure, enabling users to bask in a gentle glow even while enjoying the shade.
The irregular overlap of the holes in the double-layered perforated board generates diverse patterns of shade, resulting in an intriguing interplay between light and shadow. Observers will be captivated by the dynamic transformations of shade, which vary based on the position of the sun.
