Investors must now prepare themselves for the Federal Reserve's imminent interest rate hikes, which are poised to have a significant impact on global stock markets, cautions a market expert.

The CEO of deVere Group, Nigel Green, has issued this warning in the midst of a decline in Wall Street stocks following the release of favorable job data, which has heightened concerns regarding the trajectory of interest rates. In response, the Dow Jones witnessed a loss of 482 points or 1.4%, the S&P 500 dropped by 1.4%, and the Nasdaq experienced a 1.6% decline. Simultaneously, European stocks, represented by the pan-European Stoxx 600 index, concluded the day with a 2.5% downturn.

Green explains, "The release of robust job data in the US, coupled with the minutes from the Fed's recent meeting indicating that 'almost all' members of the FOMC concur that further tightening will likely be necessary, has sent the markets into a state of turmoil. This double whammy, consisting of strong economic data and the Fed's inclination to raise rates, signals to global investors that the central bank of the world's largest economy is far from finished with its rate hikes."

Continuing his assessment, he advises, "Investors need not panic; however, it is imperative that they reevaluate their portfolios at present and, if necessary, rebalance them to accommodate the forthcoming round of rate hikes by the Fed. It would be wise to act promptly in order to seize potential opportunities to acquire high-quality stocks that may have fallen out of favor in recent months."

Increased borrowing costs have a direct impact on corporate profits, as companies contend with elevated interest expenses on their existing debt or encounter greater challenges in financing new ventures. This, in turn, typically leads to a decline in investor confidence and a drop in stock prices.

Furthermore, hikes in interest rates tend to discourage consumer borrowing and spending. As borrowing expenses rise, individuals may become more reluctant to obtain new loans for significant purchases such as homes, vehicles, or other consumer goods. Reduced consumer spending can exert a detrimental effect on the earnings and profitability of businesses, consequently driving down stock prices.

Moreover, as interest rates ascend, fixed-income investments such as bonds become relatively more appealing than stocks. As bond yields increase, investors may choose to reallocate their investments from stocks to bonds, seeking higher returns with reduced risk.

With expectations of stock market corrections emerging this summer, astute investors will be engaging in discussions with financial advisors to identify potential winners and losers during such a downturn.

In light of persistently high inflation, portfolios should include sectors that thrive in a stagflationary environment. These sectors encompass commodities like oil, as their prices tend to rise in response to inflation; consumer staples such as food and hygiene products, which enjoy relatively stable demand; healthcare, which offers essential services less susceptible to economic cycles; and utilities, including electricity, gas, and water, which maintain consistent demand.

As always, investors should maintain a diversified portfolio across various asset classes, sectors, and regions to maximize returns while minimizing risk exposure.
